Miami Police Arrest Man For Trying To Rob Bank, Threatening To Blow Up School

Miami Police arrested a man for calling in a bomb threat to the high school and attempting to rob a bank by threatening to blow up the school.

Bobby Harris, 24, was arrested on complaints of extortion, making terroristic threats, and misuse of 911.

Around 11:19 a.m., Tuesday, the 911 dispatch in Miami, Oklahoma received a 13-second call, in which the caller said only, "Bomb—20 minutes to find it in Miami High School."

Police said they contacted officials at the school, and the school was evacuated without incident.

The Miami Police Department learned that two other calls were made to the Welch State Bank, at 2525 North Main Street in Miami. Police said the caller demanded a large sum of money, threatening to blow up the school if his demands were not met.

Miami Police located the origin of the 911 call and then located Harris in that area. Harris was arrested in a wooded area behind the Walmart Super Center.

Police said Harris admitted to making the calls. They said he told police he needed the money, that there was no bomb in the school.

Despite that, due to the nature of the calls and the date (the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks) police said bomb detection units with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol and the Tulsa Bomb Squad swept the campus for explosive devices and hazardous material. They found none and declared the school safe and open for business around 3:30 p.m.

Harris was booked into the Ottawa County Jail on a $200,000 bond.
