Oral Roberts improved one shot as a team and held steady at third in the team standings during the final round of the Fairway Club Invitational, hosted by Nebraska at the ArborLinks Golf Course. Nebraska won the team title with an aggregate score of 899 (206-292-301), while ORU finished three-shots back at 902 (303-300-299) after steadily improving in each of the first three rounds of the season.
Shannon Allen finished with a 220 (69-72-79) in third place, one shot back of Ricky Hearden of Illinois State and Kevin Gillick of Nebraska. Hearden took home medalist honors in a playoff. Scott Newell was just one shot back of his teammate in a tie for fourth after carding a 73 in the final round to finish with a three-round total of 221 (76-72-73).
Spencer Sheets and Jake Spencer tied for 31st individually, shooting 72 and 79, respectively in the third round. Sheets posted his first par round of the tournament to finish at 233 (81-80-72), while Spencer shot 79 on the final day to also finish at 233 (78-76-79).
Rounding out the ORU finishers was Trevor McInroe, who, like Sheets, got under 80 for the first time, shooting 75 on Tuesday to finish tied for 51st with a score of 238 (80-83-75).
Playing as an individual, Josh Bernard shot 79-79-82 (240) for the tournament, tying him for 56th overall, despite posting the best scoring of the tournament (2.92, -1) on the par 3 holes. Allen finished second in the field with 13 birdies, and was tied for fourth in par 5 scoring, playing the course's longest holes to a 4.42 average (-7). Newell led the field in pars with 37 and tied Allen at a +5 (4.17) clip on par 4 holes.
Next up for ORU is the 2012 Bill Ross Intercollegiate, hosted by UMKC in Overland Park, Kan., on October 15-16.
