A Washington County judge declared a mistrial after the jury came back deadlocked in the trial of a Dewey mother charged with child neglect.

Danielle Connor was charged after Dewey Police say she left a 16-month-old toddler in a bathtub full of hot water, causing severe water burns over 30 percent of the child's body.

Connor took the witness stand on Tuesday and told the court she had neglected her daughter on the night sustained the burns, but defense witnesses said she was a caring mom who took precautions to keep her children safe.

The state said Connor had changed her story about the cause of the child's burns, at first telling police that a pot of hot water on the stove had scalded the child.

After listening to closing statements Wednesday morning, the jury began deliberations just after 10 a.m.

Connor will be put back on the court docket and will next appear in court on September 19.
