I remember when I was 17 years old. You know what I wasn't doing…?
Taking the outright lead at the US OPEN!
At an age when I was doing homework and bagging groceries at my part-time job, young Beau Hossler is playing championship-level golf. He has been one of the top guys to watch during this weekend's tournament so far. Usually I pay attention to the usual golfers – Tiger Woods, Rickie Fowler, Hunter Mahan – the usual suspects.
But there is nothing usually about Hossler. He may not have played in front of 100 people before now. Tiger, Rickie and Hunter are all past winners and will play in front of the big galleries at the Olympic Club.
Hossler is a senior-to-be in high school and is carrying around a golf bag this week with his school's "SMCHS" insignia on it. A far cry from Nike, Titleist and Callaway.
That is what is so great about golf. A 17 year old kid with braces and a goofy visor can go out and hit perfect golf shots that bring 20+ year PGA vets to their knees. He sank a putt that put Tiger Woods – 14-time major winning Tiger Woods – in the rear view mirror!
Golf is the ultimate equalizer. Anyone can beat anyone. That's why I love it. That's why I want to watch Hossler.
He has since slipped a bit. A few shots off the lead but I don't care. I'm still glued to his every swing. How awesome would it be if he was in contention on Sunday?!
