Last night's round of showers/storms was rather spotty as you can see from the 24 hour rainfall map on the right, courtesy of the OK Mesonet. A few lucky locations received some generous rainfall, but most of us are still desperately in need of rain. As you can also see from the second image on the right, we have a good shot at some soaking rains as the QPF map valid through Sunday morning has OK pretty much in a bullseye for several inches of rain.
Another round of showers/storms will be developing late this afternoon/evening and moving across much of the state during the overnight hours. Yet another round of showers/storms will be developing later Wednesday and that activity will affect much of the state into Thursday morning before everything finally moves on eastward. Thus, most of that QPF shown on the right will occur over the next two days.
Some of those storms will also pose a severe threat with wind/hail the primary concern although an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. Locally heavy rains may also pose a threat of flooding problems so some locations could go from drought to flood by the time this is all said and done. The system that will be moving through later Wednesday appears to pose the greatest threat, not only for severe weather but also locally heavy rainfall. Bottom line is we are in a very unsettled weather pattern into Thursday morning which should go a long ways toward easing our developing drought situation.
After that, much cooler air will settle into the state providing some pleasantly cool mornings and mild afternoons. Since we are back into the 90s again today and will be well into the 80s on Wednesday, highs in the 70s for Thursday and Friday will provide some welcome relief from the early season heat. Also, overnight temperatures will be in the 50s for Friday and Saturday mornings which will be quite pleasant indeed.
A return southerly flow over the weekend will quickly heat things back up and there may even be a few spotty showers before the weekend is over, but they should be just that, very isolated in nature.
So, stay tuned and check back for updates.
