The University of Tulsa football team added a receiver to the roster Wednesday as head coach Bill Blankenship announced that Nebraska receiver Khiry Cooper has signed scholarship papers and been admitted to TU as a graduate student.

"I'm really excited about the addition of Khiry to our football program. He is an extremely gifted athlete and is someone I've known and recruited when he was in high school in Louisiana," said Blankenship. "Khiry's physical maturity should help him make an impact this coming season."

Khiry (pronounced KY-ree) will have one season of football eligibility remaining to play at TU.

The 6'3, 205 pound receiver played both baseball and football at Nebraska. In his three years on the football field for the Cornhuskers, Cooper caught 21 passes for 140 yards and one touchdown and 27 career games.

Cooper played in nine games during the 2011 football season, catching four passes for 60 yards. As a red-shirt freshman in 2009, Cooper played in 12 games and caught 17 passes for 80 yards and one touchdown. He started four games and had three catches against Texas Tech, Baylor and Kansas and scored his lone TD with a 13-yard reception against Texas Tech.

Cooper was selected in the fifth round by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 2008 MLB Draft, but elected to play both football and baseball at Nebraska.

In high school, Cooper was one of the top wide receivers in the state of Louisiana. He accounted for 1,700 yards and 42 touchdowns in three years at Shreveport's Calvary Baptist Academy.

The Golden Hurricane opens its season Sept. 1, 2012 at Iowa State before returning to Tulsa for the season opener on Sept. 8 against Tulane.
