Good weather greets us on this Good Friday. Clouds are slowly eroding and we're getting a glimpse of that sunshine, which may be a bit elusive this weekend. Hopefully, we can make it through our Easter egg hunts and family gatherings without thunderstorms putting a damper on those activities, but there is a risk of that through the weekend.
A weakening cold front will be approaching Oklahoma Friday night into Saturday morning. As it becomes more detached from the upper-level energy, the front will slow down and eventually stall out across the southern Plains. The good news: widespread severe weather is not anticipated. The bad news: that stalling front may keep our weather unsettled throughout the weekend. Several rounds of rain and thunderstorms are possible for any given location. The map above, from the Hydrometeorological Prediction Center, shows the potential rain totals through Sunday evening. Major rainfall is not expected from this relatively weak system, but half an inch to an inch of rain can't be ruled out.
The take-away: the weekend won't be a washout, but rain and garden-variety thunderstorms will enter the picture around sunrise tomorrow. That will be the mostly likely time for rain so keep that in mind before heading out the door Saturday morning. This cluster of rain and thunder will make its way from north to south, hopefully clearing most of the region by evening. Some more "splash-and-dash" showers are possible Easter Sunday, so you might want to have that umbrella handy if you are heading to church services or to see family. Let's just hope we don't have too many soaking wet Easter eggs on our hands!
Beyond Easter, we've got a fairly active pattern developing. Temperatures for the first half of the work week will be near or slightly-below average. We will be caught between a cold pattern to our east and southerly flow in response to a storm system moving in from the west. Severe weather may be in the picture for next Thursday. We'll sort those details out as that time approaches.
Have a wonderful Easter weekend! We'll hope it turns out more sunny than soggy, but be prepared for both! Be sure to follow me on Twitter: @GroganontheGO and "like" me on Facebook!
