A million dollar strip mall in north Tulsa is in need of entrepreneurs.
The Shoppes on Peoria is a joint effort between the city of Tulsa and several community groups meant to spur economic development. Organizers just need to finalize the businesses that will be there.
The Shoppes on Peoria are slowly, but finally taking shape. The $3.8 million project at Pine and Peoria in North Tulsa is funded by a federal grant.
Tim Smallwood says construction can't wrap up fast enough.
"I hope to be open sometime the first of September," Smallwood said.
Smallwood is one of about ten small business owners who will occupy the Shoppes. He owns Tropical Smoothie Cafe in South Tulsa, but his heart is on the north side and he wants to help make it a vibrant part of the city again.
"I remember years ago when I was younger, there was everything there. Movie theaters, different shopping centers, different places to eat besides what we have now. I mean, it's really changed in the last thirty years," Smallwood said.
The Shoppes have been planned for several years. The 17,000 square-foot retail center will employ about 50 people among the 10 stores and offer services and goods needed in that area, like clothing stores, eateries and dry cleaners.
"We're looking for tenants that meet the needs of the community, we are looking for tenants who want to be local business owners and who have an interest in helping to grow not only North Tulsa, but Tulsa in general," said Rose Washington with the Tulsa Economic Development Corporation.
Councilor Jack Henderson was a big champion of the project.
"More jobs, added value, increase the property value and to get this community excited again about growing. That's what this is about," Henderson said.
Half of the stores are already finalized, but there are still several vacancies. The city hopes there are more entrepreneurs in the crowd just like Smallwood.
Construction on the Shoppes on Peoria is ahead of schedule and should be complete by the end of July.
