A Chouteau man was killed early Monday after troopers say he failed to yield to oncoming traffic on a Mayes County highway. The two-car collision took place at 4 a.m. on U.S. Highway 412, just west of Chouteau.

Mark Christy Sr. died after his 1995 Saturn pulled into the path of a 2004 GMC Envoy driven by Phillip Thompson of Salina, according to a report by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Christy, 54, died at the scene from massive injuries.

Both vehicles ran off the north side of the highway after the collision, and Thompson's Envoy flipped over, coming to rest on its wheels.

Thompson, also 54, was treated and released from a Mayes County medical center for head and internal injuries.

The trooper's report says Christy's condition at the time of the wreck was unknown. It lists the cause of the collision as failing to yield from a yield sign.
