I don't get some of you OU fans

I don't get some of you fans.

Specifically, today, you Sooners fans. Not all of you. Just some of you. The ones that are ticked off that Landry Jones decided to return to Norman for his senior season.

A lot of you are mesmerized by the ‘Belldozer'. You have fallen in love with the new dude in town. The cool, dimpled-one who is collecting homecoming votes like

Well what about the guy that got you here? What has Landry Jones ever done wrong?

College football fans, more than any other fans, live so much in the present that they forget the past. I understand how it happens. College football is such a sprint to the finish line. The season is so short you have to perform NOW. But why has so much venom suddenly started flowing Jones' way? I've heard it from a lot of OU fans. I can't figure out why. Has he lost some luster because of Blake Bell's success running the ball?

Those of you who wish Landry would just get out of town and take his game to the NFL are dead wrong. It's the wrong move for Jones. It's the wrong move for OU. Bob Stoops should weep tears of joy tonight that he has No. 12 coming back to OU. He's the best chance the Sooners have at winning a national title in 2012.

Furthermore, what did Blake Bell do this year? Made some nice scoring runs. What else did he do? Completed 1 of 4 passes (two if you count his interception) for 8 total yards. As great as the rushing numbers are, his passing track record isn't stellar. We don't have a large enough sample size to say he'll be good or bad as a full time passer, but why would you argue with a guy like Jones in the pocket?

This season, Jones threw for 4,463 yards, 29 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He finished on a slide, but that's not indicative of what he's done his entire career. Do you think he won't be great as a senior? Do you think suddenly he'll forget how to throw? Are you THAT in love with Blake Bell's feet?

Landry is the right choice. Period. Don't get swayed by Bell, the flavor of the month QB. I don't want to hear your ‘Oh, well, Landry threw a lot of interceptions this year and we lost Bedlam because of him' rants. No, you lost Bedlam because OSU was flat out better. Landry Jones didn't allow 44 points.

Jones will be in the NFL someday. That day doesn't have to be today. How many other schools (again, not all of you) have even a fraction of the fan base pleading for its all-time leading passer to be dumped on the curb? I don't hear USC fans calling for Matt Barkley's backup. Only two Big 12 quarterbacks had a higher QB rating this year than Jones… RG3, the Heisman winner, and Brandon Weeden.

Stop clamoring for the new fad. Don't fall in love with the right now. Look at the body of work over an entire career. Remember how Jones played for you in the past three seasons? He stepped in as a freshman and did well in Sam Bradford's absence. He led you to a BCS game as a sophomore. He was subpar twice this season and still won you a bowl game.

The future isn't always viewed best through the windshield. Sometimes, it's beneficial to look in the rearview mirror. Jones is the right quarterback for the Sooners going forward.
