TULSA, Oklahoma -- The Golden Hurricane jumped out to a double-digit lead in the game's first four minutes, built an even bigger advantage and cruised to a 72-53 win over the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks Sunday.
Tulsa scored the first 11 points of the game, six from Junior Taleya Mayberry, after just 3:45 had elapsed to take a commanding lead early in the contest. The Ladyjacks cut the lead to five points less than three minutes later after a Tammara Marion three-point shot.
However, that's when the Golden Hurricane began to dominate and took the game over.
TU scored 12 unanswered points, the first four coming from the charity stripe, which was part of a larger 19-4 run to take a 32-12 advantage with just six minutes left in the first half. The lead would hold and the Golden Hurricane went into the locker room leading 43-21.
The difference-makers were points in the paint and scoring on turnovers, with Tulsa outscoring the Ladyjacks down low 20-10 and scoring 19 points off of 15 Stephen F. Austin turnovers.
The second half turned out to be more of the same in the second half, with the Ladyjacks only able to make up one point in the loss.
Mayberry lead all scorers in the contest with 17 points, grabbing nine rebounds and dishing out five assists in the contest, while Taylor Hooker added in 16 points, seven assists and four boards in the win.
The Golden Hurricane will now return home, before starting conference play at 7 p.m. Thursday against the Southern Miss Golden Eagles.
