A Tulsa family escaped injury but lost their home to fire Sunday morning. It happened in the 1500 block of West Bowen Place and it was caused on a space heater.
"The space heater was placed between two couches in the living room," said Tulsa Fire Public Information Officer Stan May. "It is still unclear if the fire was caused by the heater being too close to combustibles or if the cord shorted out causing the fire."
The Tulsa Red Cross is helping the family with a place to stay, food and clothing.
The fire department wants to remind residents that if they use a space heater, be sure to place it on a hard surface at least three feet away from anything that could catch fire such as furniture and holiday decorations.
Also be sure to check the electrical cord and make sure everything is in good working order.
