About 1,300 people in the Okmulgee County town of Morris have been without water or have had very low pressure since early Wednesday morning.
Crews are working to repair a leak to an 8-inch water main that connects Morris to Okmulgee city water. They've had a hard time finding the leak because the line ruptured where it crosses a creek along old Morris highway.
"With it being underwater, it is tough to find. It is amazing how difficult it was to find the leak," said George Jacobs, Okmulgee County Emergency Management.
At one point, the line was losing 40,000 gallons an hour.
Portable water tanks have been brought to downtown Morris where people can get drinking water until water service is restored. contractor will likely put in a temporary line to get water flowing again while permanent repairs are made.
"And then we've got the surrounding fire departments on alert that if we have a fire, they automatically roll tankers to us," Jacobs said.
Morris Schools canceled classes for Thursday.
Since crews will have to dam up a creek, water will have to be pumped out, and that could take some time. Contractors will likely put in a temporary line so they can restore water service to Morris faster.
