Police Offer Safety Tips For Oklahoma Holiday Shoppers

TULSA, Oklahoma -- As you get ready for a shopping frenzy on Friday, police officers want to remind you to take a few extra minutes to think about safety.

Car break-ins are already a problem and thieves will be out looking for vehicles loaded down with gifts.

Officers say never leave anything of value visible inside your car. If you don't need a GPS, radar detector, satellite radio receiver, or iPod, take them out before heading to shop.

Don't hide your purse under the seat or leave money in the console or glove box and take care of your packages after you buy them.

"Put stuff in your car, lock it in your trunk, but, do it as you're leaving that place," said Tulsa Police Sergeant Brandon Watkins. "If you do it and stay there, you're telling that person who is watching the parking lot, I have valuables in my trunk and they'll break into your trunk, so do it before you .go to the next store."

Police say you can disable the trunk switch in your car so burglars can't break your window and pop the trunk so easily.
