American Legion Post 20 in Fort Gibson is creating a Trail of Honor leading to the Fort Gibson National Cemetery. The post is putting up hundreds of American flags along a 2-mile stretch from Highway 62 to the cemetery.

So far, donations have paid for 442 flags. The goal is to raise enough funds for about 100 more.

"I hope it touches their heart; I hope it digs deep in reminding them that we just don't take our liberties and our freedoms for granted," Post Commander Tim Smith.

The flags will fly on all federal holidays and when an active duty member of the military is killed in action and is buried at the national cemetery.
