CLAREMORE, Oklahoma -- The president of Rogers State University is recommending a Chelsea soldier and RSU student killed in Afghanistan in early August be awarded a posthumous degree.

The item is on the agenda for the university's board of regents meeting Monday.

Sergeant Anthony Del Mar Peterson, 24, was killed when he was struck by small arms fire while on patrol in Paktia Province in Afghanistan. He was an infantryman with Company B, 1st Battalion, 279th Infantry.

RSU says Peterson was an undergraduate student on active duty. He had earned 71 hours with a grade point average of 2.11 on a 4.00 scale, who therefore successfully completed his Associate in Arts in Liberal Arts degree.

If approved, the recommendation will go to the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education for final action.
