TULSA, Oklahoma – University of Tulsa senior defensive back John Flanders has been declared academically ineligible and will not play in the season opener against Oklahoma.
The university made the announcement Friday evening saying that Flanders is seeking a waiver from the NCAA.
If the waiver is denied, Flanders will sit out the season as an academic red shirt and will have one year of eligibility remaining.
Last season Flanders started all 13 games as a junior and he was instrumental in TU's big win over Notre Dame after snagging an interception in the end zone as time expired.
He recorded 45 tackles and two interceptions including one interception for a touchdown in the Hawaii Bowl.
Flanders is the second player TU has lost this week as Damaris Johnson was suspended after being charged with felony embezzlement.
Tulsa opens the season against Oklahoma Saturday at 7 p.m.
