TULSA, Oklahoma -- Most members of the Tulsa Police Department will be getting a change of uniform temporarily.

Police say because of the record high temps, uniformed patrol officers will be wearing a police football jersey with the Tulsa Police badge imprinted on the front and Tulsa Police on the back.

In a Tulsa Police news release, officers will display a badge in open view while wearing this jersey and are required to carry police identification at all times.

If a citizen is concerned about the identity of the officer, they can ask to see the officer's identification or call 911 and ask for a supervisor.

The release says wearing of this uniform is optional and not all officers will wear this temporary uniform.

This temporary uniform will allow officers a cooler option to avoid heat related injuries as they have no other choice but to continue work outside.

Prior to this temporary change, officers in specialty units such as gangs, warrants and officers on special assignments were the only officers allowed to wear this uniform on duty.
