OKLAHOMA CITY -- A big third quarter gave the Bethel Lady Wildcats enough momentum to top Perkins-Tryon 40-32 Friday in the semifinals of the Class 3A Girl’s State Tournament.
Trailing 13-12 after the first quarter, the Bethel defense clamped down. The Lady Wilccats forced Perins-Tryon into nine misses and four turnovers, while scoring 14 points on the offensive end to take a 26-16 lead at half.
The lead maintained for most of the third quarter and Bethel started the fourth quarter leading 33-25, but the Lady Demons went down with a fight. Perkins-Tryon opened the quarter on a 7-2 run, book-ended by three-pointers by junior Shelby Stansberry.
But that’s when Bethel started to kill the clock. The Lady Wildcats held be ball for most of the game’s final four minutes, allowing Perkins-Tryon just four possessions to close the game. Bethel hit on three free throws and a layup by Taylor Cooper to ice the game.
Cooper led all scorers with 12 points, while senior Sami Martin added 11 points.
For the Lady Demons, Stansberry finished tied with sophomore Jordan Gorham for a team-high nine points.
The Lady Wildcats will now take on the Kansas Lady Comets at 12:15 p.m. Saturday for the Class 3A Gold Ball.
