OKLAHOMA CITY—The Fort Cobb-Broxton Mustangs fought their way to the Class A state championship title beating Cheyenne-Reydon 50-41.

The battle was tight in the beginning and Cheyenne led 9-7 after the first quarter of play.

With just over five minutes left in the first half, Fort Cobb tied the game at 11 and from then on they would never trail again.

At the half, junior Gavan Steinmetz led the Mustangs with 13 points while Cheyenne was led by Jake Moler with five points.

The second half saw Cheyenne use the first two minutes to pull within two points.

The No. 4 ranked Mustangs kept their cool and slowly but surely extended the lead to 35-28 by the end of the third.

Nearly two minutes went by midway through the fourth without a point by either team.

Fans were on their feet with voices raised as the two teams tumbled, rolled and scrounged out each possession.

Yet again Cheyenne pulled within five, but Fort Cobb used a couple free throw opportunities and two lay ups to extend the lead back to as much as 14.

Steinmetz led all scorers with 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting at the free throw line as well as three, three-point baskets.

Mustang junior Bryan Lewis finished with 14 while senior Nathan Beene totaled 12.

The Bears were led by senior Pete Drouhard who managed 12 points. Austin Thrash added 11 points. Cheyenne-Reydon finishes the season at 27-4

Coach Scott Hines and the Mustangs finish their state title season at 28-1.

This is the third boys state championship title for Fort Cobb who also won in 2000 and 2005.
