GUTHRIE, Oklahoma -- Guthrie defensive end/wide receiver Kentrell Brothers has had, by all accounts, a stand out season.

The senior posted more than 1,300 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns on offense, while notching 100 tackles and 19 sacks defensively. But if you ask him, the credit doesn’t go to him for the Blue Jays’ run to the state semifinals.

“Defense comes easy when you have linebackers like Landry [Chappell] and John [Clark]in the middle, [runners] have no choice other than to bounce it outside or my brother [Richard] on the other side running the guy over to me to get a sack,” Brothers said. “All my props go out to [my teammates].”

His coaches, on the other hand, had plenty of praise for their All-American player and it starts with his willingness to do anything for to benefits the team.

“We’ve had some great offensive players and we’ve had some great defensive players, but he never leaves the field,” Guthrie head coach Rafe Watkins said. “He never wants a break and he’s done that since he was a sophomore and that’s when we realized how special he was.”

However, Watkins’ praise of the standout didn’t stop at what he accomplished between painted white lines.

“The thing that gets overlooked a lot of times is what a great student that he is,” Watkins said. “He had offers from Duke, Vanderbilt, Tulsa and Baylor. You don’t get much better academic-wise than those institutions.”
