STILLWATER, Oklahoma – The Booker T. Washington Hornets took the momentum early and rode it to a 38-11 victory over Guthrie Friday to advance to the state championship game.
The Hornets (12-1) scored the game’s first 14 points, starting with an incredible display by quarterback Jordy Albert. Albert spun away from a potential sack, and then flung a pass across his body to receiver Dante Barnett for a 7-0 lead.
Guthrie (11-2) missed a field goal on its ensuing possession, and Albert took advantage with another touchdown pass, this time to Tyler Lockett, to stretch the lead to 14-0 still in the first quarter.
The Blue Jays got on the board thanks to a blocked field goal returned for an 80-yard touchdown by Kal Callins, and they added a two-point conversion to cut the lead to 14-8. But that was the closest they would come for the rest of the night.
Albert continued to carve up the Guthrie defense and led Booker T. to a 28-8 halftime lead. BTW added 10 more points in the third quarter to finish the scoring.
The Hornets will now advance to the state championship game for the second time in three years, where they will face East Central. The Cardinals defeated Lawton MacArthur 30-15 in the other semifinal game Friday.
