SPERRY, Oklahoma -- The sign fans hung on the fence behind the Sperry Pirates’ bench said it all Friday night. It read: "6-0 > 3-3."
The Pirates improved to 7-0 after beating the visiting Berryhill Chiefs 34-13. The win kept the Pirates squarely atop the 3A-District 5 heap. They lead Cascia Hall by a half game.
After Berryhill drove 52-yards on its first drive, the Pirates responded with a scoring drive of their own. Sperry drove down the field to tie the score in the first quarter on a 10-yard touchdown run by Aaron Beats.
Neither team moved the ball much in the second quarter until Sperry’s final possession. The state touchdown leader, Bennie Driver, drove past the defense for a 4-yard score to give the Pirates a 14-7 halftime advantage.
Sperry piled on in the second half and sent Berryhill to second straight loss. The Chiefs have been streaky this season, losing their first two games, winning the next three before falling again the past two Fridays.
The Chiefs had some bright spots. They converted a first quarter 4th-and-6 play with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Dolan. The Chiefs will look to improve on their 3-4 record in week eight when they host Dewey at 7:30 p.m.
