SAND SPRINGS, Oklahoma – Stillwater held off Sand Springs 42-35 in a wild affair at Charles Page High School on Friday night.
The Pioneers built a 21-7 lead in the second quarter, but Darrack Harger led the Sandites down the field midway through the period and cut the Pioneer lead to 21-14 on a quarterback keeper.
Stillwater reached midfield on its next drive, but the Pioneers were forced to punt with two minutes left in the first half. Sand Springs appeared to be in good shape as Harger maneuvered the Sandites down the field with his arm and feet. But a misplaced throw landed in the hands of Stillwater’s JT Rhoades and the Pioneers took over.
After Corey Hassel turned a bubble screen into a big gain, Stillwater had one last shot before the break. Jerame Littell came through for the Pioneers by throwing a perfect strike to Jesse Vester for six points and Stillwater went into the half with a 28-14 lead.
Sand Springs kept the game close the second half, but the Pioneers squeaked out a victory. Stillwater hosts Bixby next week, while Sand Springs visits Union.
