SAND SPRINGS, Oklahoma – In one of the most exciting finishes of Week 3, the Sapulpa Chieftains escaped with a 21-14 victory over the Sand Springs Sandites in overtime Friday.
The teams went into halftime tied 14-14, and it was defensive struggle for the rest of the night. Neither team scored in the third or fourth quarter; Sapulpa (2-1) had a chance to kick a go-ahead field goal with time winding down in regulation, but pushed it wide.
On the first drive of overtime, Tyler Williams connected on a 12-yard touchdown pass to Levi Pickering to give the Chieftains the lead.
On the next possession, the Sandites (0-3) drove to the 2-yard line. But the Sapulpa defense responded with a goal line stand to clinch the victory. It was the second consecutive heartbreaking loss for Sand Springs, which fell 17-14 in Week 2.
Both teams will begin district play next; Sapulpa against Norman (3-0), and Sand Springs against Stillwater (0-3).
