GLENPOOL, Oklahoma -- Just observe him at practice for five minutes and you can tell it’s his team. Isaac Maselera’s teammates gravitate towards him. He smiles and jokes, laughs and winks. He is the main attraction for the Glenpool Warriors.
And with good reason.
The 185-pound senior is committed to play his college football at Oklahoma State. He was the Pokes’ first verbal commit from the 2011 class. His early commitment doesn’t come as any surprise. You see, Maselera does everything fast.
“He runs a legit 4.4 forty (yard dash),” said his head coach, Steve Edwards.
Maselera isn’t looking ahead to his days in Stillwater just yet. The two-way star has unfinished business in the high school ranks.
Last season, Maselera’s coming out party didn’t end the way the speedster had envisioned. Glenpool cruised into the season finale against Star Spencer on a 23-game winning streak. They walked off the field district runners-up, surprised and frustrated. They were even more frustrated after losing at home in the first round of the playoffs just one week later.
Those memories hover over his head during drills at Warriors practice.
“Me and my teammates, we talk about it all the time,” he said. “We just don’t want it to happen again.”
The Warriors have a legitimate shot at winning another gold ball this season to put beside the 2007 and 2008 trophies already in the case. Most of the optimism is credited to Maselera, but as much as he tries to hide from it, he can’t outrun being Glenpool’s star.
“We should have won it all last year but the team wasn’t right,” he said. “(This year) we’re more together.”
He blasts Incubus’ ‘Dig’ before games. From what we can tell, he digs playing football.
