OKLAHOMA CITY – The Douglass Trojans dished out a 32-minute beating Saturday, as they beat the Bishop McGuinness Fighting Irish 86-51 to claim the Class 4A Gold Ball.
Douglass jumped out to a quick 23-9 lead in the first, as the McGuinness offense struggled to match shot for shot.
Many of the Trojans’ shots were uncontested, as the Irish’s defense was selectively present. McGuinness committed 10 fouls, not the type of defense head coach Tondrell Durham was likely barking from the sidelines.
While four of the five starters for Douglass are juniors, freshman Stephon Clark held his own with the upperclassmen. With his nimble, fluid drives, the 5-foot-9 guard made himself known on the hardwood around those towering above him. He finished with 14 points.
Five more Trojans scored in double figures, including DeVonte Smith with 14, Romond and Ramond Jenkins with 10 each, Darrion Williams with 15, and Marquis Buton-Hill with 19.
While the Irish struggled to keep up with the Trojans, McGuinness’ Matthew Christiansen attempted to keep his team in the game. He posted 14 points by half and pushed for his team to keep their focus. He ended his last game with the Irish with 20 points, but it wasn’t enough to drive McGuinness to the win.
Jameel Whitney was the only other McGuinness player to score in double digits with 11 points.
