Tre’Vante Porter’s future is much like that of Texas Tech’s; up in the air. The Carl Albert star committed to play football for the Red Raiders in August but with the firing of head coach Mike Leach, things are not as clear as they once were for the talented two-way player.

“I’m committed right now until they decide on a new head coach,” Porter said. “I got to meet the head coach first to see if he’s going to change the offense and defense. If he changes the offense or defense then I’m going to decommit and open up recruitment again.”

Porter is rated the seventh best prospect in Oklahoma according to Rivals.com. He recently picked up an offer from the Oklahoma Sooners which has given him more to think about.

“That was very surprising,” Porter said. “I got the call, they wanted me for receiver and I was just [smiling] from ear to ear.”

Even though the Titans star has turned his attention to basketball, he is still keeping up with the Red Raiders coaching rumors.

“I heard a mixture,” Porter said. “I heard it was going to be [defensive coordinator] Ruffin [McNeil], then I heard it was going to be the Auburn defensive coordinator, then I heard it was going to be Alabama defensive coordinator [Thursday].”

Porter has been in contact with other Tech recruits throughout the state of Oklahoma like Delans Griffin and they both agree that settling on a coach will be the biggest determining factor in their commitments.

“I talked to all of them and they basically feel the same way about it,” Porter said. “If Ruffin gets the job then they will stay committed. But if another coach gets the job they got to meet him, get to know him and see if he’s going to change the offense. “

Porter said he does not care if he plays receiver or defensive back at the collegiate level. He said he will be taking a trip to Lubbock Jan. 15 and trips to Norman and Stillwater are still possible as well.
