No more questions about BCS jinxes or Fiesta Bowl hexes. The Sooners have a win in the Fiesta Bowl and I think everyone associated with the program is breathing a sigh of relief.
I dont want to hear about the inferiority of this Connecticut team. No, they were not as good as Boise State in 2007 or West Virginia in 2008. But you had the feeling that the Sooners were playing more against themselves than they were the Huskies in this game anyway.
Landry Jones was terrific as was Ryan Broyles. I feel for Jones. The kid has had as good a two years as any quarterback in the country. Hes like Gary Gibbs. His only sin is that he followed a Sooner legend. Perhaps Jones will start to win over some of those who have been his biggest critics.
Broyles 13 catches for 170 yards while becoming physically ill on the sidelines was a statement. The only downside could be the fact that it might elevate his draft status in the minds of NFL scouts.
Gotta give Heupel an A grade is his debut as a playcaller. His offense was prepared and crisp early. They never established the run to a great degree, but the attempt to do so helped open up the passing game.
The Sooners limited the Huskies in the lone area they could do damage....surrendering less that 3-yards per carry on the ground and not yielding a touchdown to the Connecticut offense.
Special teams gave up the score, but the trip has to be very satisfying.
