There is an odd feeling for residents of our state when it comes to conference realignment. We are, for the most part honest, hard-working citizens who dont want to take any handouts or ride the coattails of our fellow man. But when it comes to the future of our athletic teams we have to hang onto Bevos horns and ride him for all hes worth.
Whether we like it or not, Texas is the big player in the Big 12 Souths melding with the Pac-10. The Longhorns control the all-mighty state of Texas. Home to 25-million people and about 100-million television sets. And the eyes of Texas are pointed at LA-LA land, the space needle and cactus country. So ours better be focused there too.
The Big 12 doled out $8-10 million in television money per athletic program last year. It is projected that new Pac-10 would double that. $20-million goes a long way toward balancing that athletics budget.
So it may be time for those of us north of the Red River to swallow our pride thank our neighbors to the south. But come the first Saturday in October at the Cotton Bowl, its on again.
