Bedlam wrestling on Sunday reminded us all why that was the sport from which the Bedlam moniker originated.
The Sooners win three of the first four matches. The only saving grace for the Cowboys among the four was freshman Jordan Oliver’s three-takedown third period which salvaged a 7 to 4 win for him at 133 pounds.
Then the Cowboys begin to roll. They win four straight matches and lead 16 to 10 headed to 197 pounds, the next to last match of the day. And Sooner senior Eric Lapotsky pins Cowboy Sophomore Alan Gelogaev to even the match at 16-16 headed to the heavyweights.
And on senior day, top-ranked Jared Rosholt outlasts Nathan Fernandez 4 to 2 in Rosholt’s final match at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
These two teams are young and talented. The Cowboys had the top-ranked recruiting class in the country last year and the Sooners were right behind them at number two. Neither may win a national title this year, but they will certainly contend in the next 2-3 years.
Since 2008 the Cowboys lead the Bedlam wrestling series 3-2-1. The magic is back in Bedlam wrestling and the best may be yet to come.
