FARGO, North Dakota -- Oral Roberts split the first of two doubleheaders with North Dakota State Saturday, losing 5-3 in the opening game, but dominating 10-0 in the closing contest.

Golden Eagles’ (18-15, 7-3) short stop Cam Schiller started the day off well for Oral Roberts, hitting a home run down the right field line to take a 1-0 lead. However in the next half-inning, Nick Colwell reached on a fielder’s choice, allowing Tyler Steen to score from third and tie the game.

Schiller went yard for the second time, with a runner on first to take a 3-1 advantage, but the Bison (10-19, 7-3)responded yet again.

In the bottom of the third with the bases loaded, Colwell flied out to center field to bring Zach Wentz home to cut the lead to one run. Zach Heidmann grounded out to second in the next at-bat to bring Tyler Steen home and tie the game.

Nic Obey singled down the left field line in the next at-bat and Tim Colwell knocked an RBI single through the right side to bring him home and take a 5-3 advantage.

The late game was controlled by Oklahoma State’s pitching staff, and specifically ORU starter Sean Johnson (3-2). The senior right-hander pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just six hits and striking out eight batters.

Conversely, Mark Hermes (2-6) struggled from the start, giving up one hit and five earned runs, without recording a single out in the loss.

The Golden Eagles and Bison will play the second half of their four-game series, another doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Sunday.
