AMES, Iowa – The No. 18 Oklahoma State softball team run-ruled Iowa State in a 15-1 blowout Sunday for the Cowgirls’ first win in conference play.

Chelsea Garcia and Julie Ward both were on fire at the plate, combining to go 5-for-6 and driving in seven runs. The Cowgirls scored all of their runs in the span of three innings, starting with six runs in the third.

Down 1-0, Sammy Jo Diffendaffer tied things with a solo home run. The rest of the frame’s runs came as part of a big two-out rally.

Alysia Hamilton drove a run home with a single, and after a walk Garcia launched a three-run home run to give OSU its first lead. The Cowgirls (28-7, 1-1) batted around, and in her second at-bat of the inning Diffendaffer drove another run with a single for a 6-1 lead. From that point forward, the Cowgirls continued to pour on runs.

OSU scored three in the fourth inning on RBI singles from Morrison and Ward and a sacrifice fly by Ashley Boyd. The Cowgirls continued their hot streak in the fifth, when they recorded their second six-run inning.

Morrison drove home another run with a single, and Hamilton followed with the same. Ward then hit a three-run home run, and Garcia scored the game’s final run thanks to an Iowa State (15-9, 1-1) throwing error.

Simone Freeman earned her eighth win of the season after holding ISU to one run on five hits in four innings. Rachel Zabriskie was credited with the loss after allowing six runs on six hits in only 2.2 innings.

The Cowgirls now have won eight of their last nine games, and will return to action Wednesday when they host Tulsa and Arkansas as part of the Border Ward. They will play Arkansas at 3 p.m. and Tulsa at 7 p.m.
