LAWRENCE, Kansas -- The Oklahoma State Cowboys’ Brad Propst celebrating his 22nd birthday Friday by picking up his third win of the season, striking out three Kansas batters in his path.
Propst threw 8.0 innings, allowing six hits in the Cowboys’ 3-1 win over the Kansas Jayhawks, claiming the first win of the three-game series.
The win marked the first Big 12 opener win since 2008, when the program started conference play with a win over Baylor.
Both teams remained scoreless until the top of the third inning, when Zach Johnson hit a double and was hit home on the next at-bat by Dane Philips, who singled to right center. Jared Womack drilled a single up the middle, sending Philips to second. Mark Ginther doubled to left center field, allowing both Womack and Philips to cross the plate and notch the 3-0 lead.
The Jayhawks answered back in the bottom of the inning, hitting their only run of the game. Kansas’ T.J. Walz finished with the loss after pitching 7.0 innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs. He struck out six batters in the 29 batters he faced.
The Cowboys improved to 14-3 overall and earned their first conference win. They’ll continue the three-game series Saturday at 1 p.m.
