TEMPE, Arizona -- The Sooner notched their second loss of the season Tuesday, after falling to the Arizona State Sun Devils, 6-2.
Bobby Shore found himself in trouble in the bottom of the third inning, when he allowed base runners to advance to second and third base off a wild pitch. A single by Arizona State’s Johnny Ruettiger hit home teammate Joey DeMichele to take the 1-0 lead.
Ruettiger then stole second and Shore pegged the next Sun Devil up to bat, loading the bases. Riccio Torrez hit a pop fly as Andrew Aplin crossed the plate for the second run of the game. A Sooner error cost Oklahoma a run on the next at-bat, as Arizona State took the 3-0 lead.
The Sooners got on the board in the top of the fifth, when Evan Mistich notched the first Oklahoma run off a sacrifice pop fly by Caleb Bushyhead.
OU found themselves in trouble again in after Arizona State put up an additional two runs in the fifth. The Sooners struggled on the mound, changing pitchers three times during the inning. The Sun Devils continued to put runs on the board, scoring again in the bottom of the sixth when DeMichele hit a single to bring home Barnes and take a commanding 6-1 lead.
The Sooners managed to squeak out one run in the top of the eighth inning when Casey Johnson grounded out to first, hitting home Tyler Ogle to narrow the score 6-2 in favor of the Sun Devils.
Oklahoma again switched pitchers in the eight, opting for shortstop Jack Mayfield, who quickly got the inning over for the Sooners to take their last chance at bat.
OU wasn’t able to produce anything in their last inning, finishing with their second loss of the season.
The Sooners will again face Arizona State Wednesday at 8:30 p.m.
