NORMAN, Oklahoma -- The Sooners started the game by putting up eight runs against struggling Golden Lions pitching and finished the game by tacking on an additional 14 runs in the eighth inning, sealing the 27-7 victory for Oklahoma and winning the first of two games between the teams.
The Golden Lions got into trouble early, as pitcher Vincent Newton allowed eight runs in the first inning.
The sophomore opened the game by walking two Sooners. His first-inning woes didn’t stop there though. Newton hit three Oklahoma batters on wild pitches and allowed two hits, including a two-run triple by Cody Reine. The Sooners took a commanding 8-0 lead in just one inning.
The Golden Lions warmed their bats up in the third inning, putting four runs on the board when Lukas Fortino and Trey Austin both singled. Ryan Gibson walked Arkansas Pine-Bluff’s Lloyd Burchett to load the bases. Barry McDonley hit a single up to shortstop Jack Mayfield, allowing Fortino to cross the plate for the Golden Lions’ first run of the game.
Gvona Turner hit a double to left center field, allowing McDonley, Burchett and Austin to all score for Arkansas Pine-Bluff, bring the game to 8-4.
Oklahoma answered back in the bottom of the fourth, putting up an additional three runs, including a two-run homer by Mayfield. The Golden Lions trailed 11-5 after the fifth inning, after committing an error to allow Mistich to score.
The Golden Lions tried to battle back, putting up two runs in the top of the seventh, one run coming when pitcher Kindle Ladd loaded the bases and threw a wild pitch, allowing Chazz Montgomery to score. An additional run in the top of the eight brought the game to 13-7 in favor of the Sooners.
Oklahoma again capitalized off the Golden Lions’ struggles on the mound by tacking on 14 additional runs in the eighth inning, including three-run homer by Jake Smith, a single by Seitzer with the bases loaded, bringing home both Drew Dahlberg and Reine, and a two-run home run by Tanner Toal.
The Sooners beat the Golden Lions 27-8 to improve to 5-0 and will again face Arkansas Pine-Bluff Wednesday at 3 p.m.
