Tulsa Grabs First Conference Win against Southern Miss
The Golden Hurricane had to battle back to grab the win over the Golden Eagles.

HATTIESBURG, Mississippi -- The Tulsa Golden Hurricane overcame a double-digit first half win to earn its first conference win Sunday 74-71 over the Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles.
Tulsa opened the game on a 5-0 run, but the Golden Eagles quickly over came the deficit with a 16-0 run to take an 11-point lead. That lead would eventually expand to a 16-point lead with seven minutes left to play in the half.
However, TU strung together a 12-6 run in the closing six minutes of the half to close the gap to 37-32 at halftime.
Another 12-6 run to start the second half gave the Golden Hurricane a one-point lead four minutes into the second half.
The lead would change hands three times in the next two minutes, but at Loren McDaniel jumper gave the Golden Hurricane a 51-49 lead with under 12 minutes left to play. Tula wouldn’t give it back.
Taleya Mayberry led all scorers with 19 points, while dishing out six assists and grabbing six steals. Chanice Scott contributed 18 points and five assists and Amanda Mason scored 13 and grabbed nine boards.
For Southern Mississippi, Tanesha Washington set the pace with 18 points and eight rebounds, with Rachel Vigers scoring 16 and grabbing eight boards.
The Golden Hurricane will take a week off before taking off Tulane at 2 p.m. Sunday Jan. 23.
