STILLWATER, Oklahoma -- The Oklahoma State Cowboys have capped off the most successful season in school history, both in regards to wins and offensive records. The two players at the forefront of the record-setting season – Brandon Weeden and Justin Blackmon – both have the option to jump ship and head to the NFL after this season.
Despite their importance to the program, Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy wouldn’t discuss the future with his players because he didn’t want to provide a distraction before the bowl game.
“The last thing they needed was their coach sitting down and talking to them about whether they were going to go to the NFL or return next season,” Gundy said. “Now that we’ve finished the season and we’ve won our bowl game, now is the time to visit with them and talk about the future. And I’m convinced they’re going to feel the same way.”
Gundy will sit down with his two star players in the days following the bowl victory over Arizona and discuss their options for the future.
Despite believing that both players can improve their draft stock by staying in Cowboy orange for another season, that’s not the biggest reason he thinks his players should return for another season.
“The college football experience, like Russell Okung came back for, like Brandon Pettigrew came back for, those guys were very happy that they came back and played another year of college football and it worked out well for them,” Gundy said. “That’s the important part of it.”
As to the other big change, replacing Dana Holgorsen as the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator, Gundy says that he was pleased with the wide-open system, but knows it won’t be precisely the same in 2011.
“I don’t know that you’ll always be exactly the way you were each year,” Gundy said. “I would like for our philosophy to stay the same, but that doesn’t mean that we may not look different next season.”
And don’t expect Gundy to return to his former play calling duties any time soon.
“It’s a very small chance that I would go back and [call plays],” Gundy said. “I liked the role that I played this year and I think it helped our team, so I don’t see that happening.”
