IRVING, Texas—Oklahoma State head football coach Mike Gundy has been named the 2010 Big 12 Coach of the Year.

“This award is a testament to the efforts of our staff and our student-athletes,” Gundy said. “It is a team award that is in recognition of a lot of hard work by people throughout our football program.”

The conference announced the award Tuesday along with other All-Big 12 individual award winners.

In Gundy’s leadership, the Cowboys finished the regular season at 10-2, winning 10 games for just the fourth time in school history.

Coach Gundy becomes OSU’s first conference coach of the year since Bob Simmons earned the honor in 1997.

The Cowboys were undefeated on the road for the first time since 1945 and along the way ended long losing streaks at Texas, Texas Tech and Kansas State.

Under Gundy, Oklahoma State’s program has been on a steady rise. He won four games his first year as head coach in 2005. Since that time OSU has gone 7-6, 7-6, 9-4, 9-4 and 10-2 in 2010. During his tenure OSU has won at least seven games in five straight seasons for the first time ever, and at least nine games in three straight seasons for the first time ever.

Oklahoma State will conclude the 2010 season with a school-record fifth straight bowl appearance.
