STILLWATER, Oklahoma -- Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden added his name to the Cowboys’ record books yet again Saturday in the Cowboys’ 55-28 win over the Baylor Bears.
Weeden finished the game setting the Cowboys’ single-game record in both pass completions with 34 and amassed 433 pass yards, topping Zac Robinson's 430-yard performance against Texas in 2008.
As a team, OSU tied their single-game record for first downs with 35 and broke their mark for total offense with 725 yards – which was set earlier in the season against Tulsa.
The junior signal caller started the game by completing his first eight passes, capped off by a five-yard touchdown strike to Justin Blackmon in his first game back after a suspension to give OSU a 10-0 lead. The touchdown grab marked Blackmon’s eighth consecutive game with a touchdown grab, setting the Oklahoma State record.
Weeden finished the first quarter 11-of-14 for 106 yards and one touchdown.
He started the second quarter in similar fashion, completing six consecutive pass attempts, setting up two consecutive Kendall Hunter one-yard touchdown rushes to put the Cowboys up 24-0.
Perhaps the only negative of the first half for Oklahoma State, kicker Dan Bailey missed his first field goal of the season – a 31-yard attempt as time expired – to keep the Cowboys’ advantage at 24-0 at half.
Oklahoma State came out firing in the second half. On their first play from scrimmage, Weeden faked the handoff and set up a reverse to Blackmon. With the help of some big blocks, the sophomore took it down the sideline 69 yards for a touchdown to give OSU a 31-0 lead. Bailey tacked on a field goal on the Cowboys’ next possession to push the lead to 34-0.
Baylor finally cracked the end zone in the third quarter. Running back Jay Finley capped off a 10-play, 87-yard drive with a nine-yard touchdown to close start the Bears’ rally.
However, Oklahoma State answered on its next possession.
Weeden connected with Colton Chelf for a 62-yard touchdown on the Cowboys’ first play of the drive to extend the Cowboys’ lead to 41-7.
The Cowboys’ next possession ended with Hunter’s first fumble of the season, which was returned to the two-yard line by Baylor’s Byron Landor. Finley scores on the Bears’ next play to close the deficit to 41-14.
The Cowboys opened up the fourth quarter with a nine-play, 80-yard drive which ended with a 20-yard strike from Weeden to Josh Cooper to take a 48-14 lead.
Terrance Ganaway scored from 28 yards out for Baylor to close the gap to 27 points, but Justin Gilbert returned the ensuing kickoff 93 yards for a score to push the lead to 55-21.
With the win, Oklahoma State takes over possession of the top spot in the Big 12 South. The Cowboys will try to retain that spot against Texas in Austin, Nov. 13.
