STILLWATER, Oklahoma – While Colton Chelf has built a reputation for being one of Oklahoma State’s most reliable receivers, he is perhaps better known by one of the Cowboys’ most memorable nicknames: “The Evil Elf.”
New OSU offensive coordinator Dana Holgorsen gave Chelf that moniker during the offseason and it has stuck. Chelf said he has no idea where it came from, but Holgorsen has a reason for it.
“He’s sneaky. Elves are fleet-footed little sneaky guys, and [Chelf] is a fleet-footed little sneaky guy,” Holgorsen said. “He’s a mean kid. He tries to lull you to sleep, and then he’ll rip your heart out.”
Holgorsen has said that he needs as many as eight reliable receivers in his spread system, and Chelf has been one of the many used during the Cowboys’ first two games. He pulled down two catches for 51 yards against Troy.
“Ever since I got moved in high school from quarterback to receiver, I’ve been catching everything,” Chelf said.
