TULSA, Oklahoma – The Tulsa Drillers could not muster much offense Wednesday and finished with a 3-1 loss to the Springfield Cardinals.
Both starting pitchers began the game well, with both teams being held scoreless through the first three innings. The Cardinals (75-60) scored the night’s first run in the top of the fourth, when Pete Kozma delivered an RBI single. Kozma later scored on a sacrifice fly by Daryl Jones for a 2-0 lead.
The Drillers (66-68) cut that lead in half with a solo home run by Bronson Sardinha in the bottom of the fifth, but they could generate no more offense for the rest of the night. The Cardinals added one more insurance run in the ninth on a solo homer by Xavier Scruggs.
Scott McGregor (6-5) earned the win for Springfield, holding the Drillers to one run on five hits in seven innings. Greg Reynolds (7-5) was credited with the loss despite a strong showing, giving up just two runs on four hits in seven innings.
The loss ended the Drillers’ two-game winning streak and prevented them from getting back to the .500 mark. The teams will continue their series at 7:05 p.m. Thursday.
