Towanda, Kansas – He sticks out in a crowd and that’s putting it lightly when you describe Jordan Phillips on the football field. You can’t miss him, Phillips is a 6-foot-6, 300 pound nose guard and tight-end for the Thunderbirds. Believe it or not, the Rivals.com four-star recruit is also the teams’ punter.
Phillips committed to the Oklahoma Sooners in June. The Kansas skyscraper has no intentions of changing his mind. The tradition and championships at OU appealed to the senior a great deal.
“They just tell you what they do, and that’s winning all the time, and that’s what I want to be a part of,” Phillips said.
His coach would be the first one to tell you that a player his caliber doesn’t come around very often, especially in Towanda. Jordan will be the first ever male student-athlete from Circle High School to receive a Division I scholarship.
“In the last six months, he’s turned into what a lot of coaches love from a senior. He is doing all the good things in the classroom. He has helped bring about the leadership that we need,” said Circle head coach Lee LeMunyon.
Phillips’ summer plans include morning and evening workouts. He is also catching up in the classroom to make sure his grades are in order by the time he graduates next may. Phillips hasn’t qualified academically, but plans on retaking the ACT again in September.
