TULSA, Oklahoma – Former Tulsa 66ers star Latavious Williams became the first player to skip college and get draftedafter playing just one year in the NBA Developmental League. The Miami took Williams in the second round with the 48th overall pick.
With his selection, Williams has opened the door for other players to make similar moves to the NBA. Williams could become a trendsetter for high school players wishing to stay in the United States and compete in minor-league play.
A day before the draft, NBDL president Dan Reed told the Associated Press that 20 percent of the NBA is made up of players from his league. With the selection of Williams, it could entice more players to forgo college and play in the D-League.
Williams caught the eyes of NBA scouts with his abilities as a scorer. During the postseason, he became one of the go-to players in the team’s run to the NBDL Championship Series.
Williams averaged 7.7 points during the regular season. He continued to improve as the year went on. Williams was one of the top scorers for the 66ers during the playoffs averaging 11.3 points.
Williams joins a franchise that finished ninth in the Western Conference last season.
