NORMAN, Oklahoma – The OU baseball team was on fire at the plate from start to finish and drubbed Texas Southern 13-1 Wednesday.
The Sooners (39-14) jumped on the board early and never let up. Cody Reine drove in the game’s first run with an RBI single in the first and added a two-run triple in the third to give OU a quick three-run lead. Reine scored on a sacrifice fly by Danny Black to extend the advantage to 4-0.
Max White blasted a solo home run in the fourth, and Garrett Buechele added an RBI single later in the inning. The Sooners continued to pile on in the next inning, scoring four runs capped off by Elliot Blair’s two-run homer to stretch the lead to 10-0.
OU finished its scoring in the seventh with three more runs, started by a lead-off home run by Ricky Eisenburg. Blair drove in another run with a triple and scored the Sooners’ final run on a single by Cale Ellis.
Texas Southern managed to avoid a shutout with an RBI double in the eighth by Terrel Jones, but J.R. Robinson recovered to force a pop-up and strikeout to end the inning and hold the Tigers to one.
Ryan Gibson earned the win after pitching five strong innings, giving up just two hits and holding the Tigers scoreless. Dakota Laufenburg was credited with the loss after surrendering nine hits and six runs in four innings of work.
The Sooners have won four straight games heading into their season-ending series with Kansas, which will begin at 7 p.m. Friday in Lawrence.
