NORMAN, Oklahoma – The OU baseball team used a huge fourth inning to coast to a 9-2 victory over Memphis Sunday.
The Sooners (37-14) took an early lead when Max White scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first, but both offenses remained quiet until the big fourth. Tyler Ogle led off the inning with a solo home run to give OU a 2-0 lead, but things were just getting started.
Cody Reine walked and Eric Ross was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the Sooners, and Danny Black took advantage with a two-run single to stretch the lead to four. OU then managed to score three more runs in the inning without recording another hit.
After his single, Black attempted to steal second. He slid in safely, and on the throw from the catcher Ross took off for home. He also made it safely, concluding a successful double steal.
After a walk and sacrifice bunt, the Sooners still had runners on second and third with one out. Garrett Buechele drove in another run on a sacrifice fly, and Max White scored his second unearned run of the game after a throwing error by the catcher moments later. OU finished the fourth inning with six runs on only three hits, and never let Memphis (26-26) back into the game.
The Tigers got on the board in the fifth on a home run by Trey Wiedman, but OU immediately responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Ross. Memphis cut into the lead again in the sixth with an RBI from Tyler Huelsing, but never got any closer.
The Sooners finished the scoring in the seventh, when Ross added his second RBI of the game. Bobby Shore was credited with the win after giving up two runs on just four hits in his six innings of work. Ryan Holland came away with the loss, surrendering four runs on five hits in only three innings.
OU will continue its home stand by hosting Arkansas at 7 p.m. Tuesday, and will return to conference play to finish the regular season against Kansas later in the week.
