NORMAN, Oklahoma – The OU baseball team erupted in the middle innings and coasted to a 14-6 victory over Memphis Saturday.
After a relatively quiet first two innings, the Sooners (36-14) started a flurry of runs in the bottom of the third. Garrett Buechele drove home the game’s first run with a double, then scored on a single by Cameron Seitzer to give OU a 2-0 lead.
The Sooners blew the game open with four runs in the fourth, starting with an RBI single by Tyler Ogle. Chris Ellison added an RBI double with two outs, and Max White closed the inning with a two-run home run to give OU a commanding 6-0 advantage.
Oklahoma continued to pile it on in the following innings, with a solo homer by Seitzer in the fifth and RBIs by Buechele and Seitzer in the sixth to stretch the lead to nine.
Memphis (26-25) finally got on the board in the top of the seventh with a two-run home run by Trey Wiedman, but the Sooners immediately responded with their second big inning of the game.
Bryan Groth connected on a two-run bomb in the bottom of the seventh, and Ricky Eisenburg drove in another run with a double. Eisenburg later scored on a double play, and Max White scored OU’s fifth run of the inning on a balk by Michael Willis.
The Tigers finally had an offensive surge in the ninth inning, scoring four runs on four hits. But that did nothing more than delay the inevitable, as the Sooners avenged their loss to Memphis Friday. The teams will finish their series at 1 p.m. Sunday.
