WICHITA, Kansas – The Oral Roberts baseball team survived a flurry of runs late in the game to defeat Wichita State 6-4 Tuesday.
Wichita State (29-17) started the scoring when Tyler Grimes scored on a double-play ball in the bottom of the first. The Golden Eagles (26-18) responded in the top of the second, when Seth Furmanek tied the game with a solo home run.
ORU scored an unearned run in the fourth inning to take its first lead of the game, and extended the lead in the top of the sixth when Colby Price blasted a two-run homer to give the Golden Eagles a 4-1 advantage.
The Shockers immediately responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to cut things back to one, but ORU added another two in seventh on RBI singles by Furmanek and P.J. Sequeira.
Erik Harbutz connected on a solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but Wichita State could not muster any more offense.
The Golden Eagles have now won eight of their last nine games and hold a significant lead in the Summit League standings. They will begin a three-game series against South Dakota State at 3 p.m. Friday.
