TULSA, Oklahoma -- The Tulsa Shock is only six days away from their debut and the players are ready to unleash head coach Nolan Richardson’s unique style on the WNBA.
“To the WNBA it’s going to be something brand new,” said fourth-year guard Scholanda Robinson. “A lot of people don’t play like this because it’s hard.”
Richardson’s “40 Minutes of Hell” was a staple during his collegiate coaching career, but before the Shock can unleash it on the league, they have to get used to the speed.
“When you [play at such a fast pace] every day your body gets used to it,” said Shock rookie – and former Sooner – Amanda Thompson. “First you need to get his style, then we get the WNBA style, put them together and win games.”
The offense relies less on set plays, and more on individuals making plays, but Richardson still orchestrates the offense.
“We want the game to be very simple. I found out a long time ago that the team that puts the ball in the hole the most times wins,” said Richardson. “They have set plays that they have to run but it’s all simple. I’m in control of the riot”
The Shock plays its first preseason game Sunday against Seattle and open the regular season May 15 against Minnesota.
