OKLAHOMA CITY – In front of a crowd dressed up as Star Wars characters, the Oklahoma City RedHawks fell 8-3 to the New Orleans Zephyrs Saturday.
The Zephyrs (9-13) started quickly with two runs in the second inning, starting with Scott Cousins’ solo home run. Alejandro Machado drove in another run with a single moments later to give New Orleans a 2-0 lead.
Lee Mitchell extended the lead with an RBI double in the fourth, but the RedHawks (15-8) responded in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run home run by Brandon Boggs to cut the lead to 3-2. The Zephyrs then pulled away in the next two innings.
Hector Luna drove in a run with a double in the fifth, and he later scored on a throwing error by Chris Davis to give New Orleans a 5-2 lead. In the sixth, Emilio Bonifacio drove another run in on a groundout, and Bryan Peterson connected on an RBI triple two batters later. Luna drove him with a single in the next at-bat to finish New Orleans’ scoring.
Chris Davis added an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, but the rest of the RedHawks could not mount a comeback.
Guillermo Moscoso (1-2) was credited with the loss after giving up five runs – three of them earned – on 10 hits in five innings of work. Brian Lawrence (1-2) earned the win after a strong outing, giving up two runs on four hits and striking out eight in seven innings.
The RedHawks’ meager offensive performance comes on the heels of two consecutive wins in which they scored more than 10 runs. The two teams will finish their four-game series at 4:05 p.m. Sunday.
